An entrance should make its presence felt from the moment you arrive. This garden was built around two clear hero elements — a mature Canary Island Palm and a custom corten steel garden bed — working together as the focal point.
No competing planting. No visual noise. Just two strong features doing the work.
Designing an Entrance Around Two Strong Features
Most front entrances rely on volume — lots of planting, lots of colour, nothing that truly stands out. This one was designed the opposite way.
A mature Canary Island Palm and a custom corten steel garden bed carry the entire design. Everything else was kept deliberately secondary so these two elements could make a clear, confident statement from the street.
The palm delivers instant scale and presence. Its thick trunk and broad crown give the entrance genuine weight and permanence. The corten bed provides structure and a clean architectural edge. Together they create an arrival that feels intentional and established from day one.

Design & Construction
The Canary Island Palm was selected for its mature trunk and broad, symmetrical crown, and positioned as the anchor of the entrance — tall enough to be seen from the street and placed to draw the eye before anything else registers.
A custom corten steel garden bed was fabricated to frame the planting, giving it a clean, architectural edge. The steel provides a strong visual counterpoint to the palm's organic form while developing a rich patina over time.
Paving connects the street to the entrance, creating a clear path without interrupting the sightline to the main features.
Planting
Cacti and bold tropical planting fill the corten bed and surrounding areas. These were chosen specifically to complement the palm and steel rather than compete with them — textural, architectural, and well suited to the coastal Burleigh Heads climate.
The planting adds depth and interest up close while remaining secondary when viewed from the street.
The Result
A Burleigh Heads entrance with genuine presence. The mature Canary Island Palm and corten steel bed do the heavy lifting, giving the home clear scale and structure from the street while requiring almost no ongoing maintenance.
