Childcare Landscape Design — Ocean Shores
A childcare outdoor space has to survive hundreds of small feet a day, not just look good for photos. This one's built around a dry creek bed and timber bridge, with play equipment and a sand pit positioned to hold up to real, daily use.
No decorative planting that can't take traffic. No surfaces that turn to mud after rain. Just a space built to be played on, every day, for years.
Designing a Childcare Outdoor Space Built for Daily Use
A childcare playground gets used harder than almost any other outdoor space — constant foot traffic, sand tracked everywhere, water play, and zero tolerance for anything that could trip, pinch, or fail. The brief here was straightforward: a dry creek bed and bridge as the central feature, with play equipment and a sand pit around it, all built to handle daily use without ongoing repair.
Nothing decorative for its own sake. Every material was chosen because it holds up — not because it photographs well.
Design & Construction
The dry creek bed was formed with river pebble and stone, graded to fall gently toward one end so surface water drains through rather than pooling after rain. A timber bridge crosses the creek bed at its centre — a straightforward, practical crossing point rather than a design centrepiece, built to take repeated daily foot traffic from small children.
Play equipment was positioned with clear sightlines for supervision, spaced to keep separate activity zones from overlapping.
Play Equipment & Sand Pit
The sand pit sits away from the main thoroughfare, with edging that keeps sand contained rather than spreading into the creek bed or walkways. Surfacing around the play equipment was chosen for fall safety and drainage, so the space stays usable straight after rain instead of turning to mud.
Planting & Edges
Native planting was used around the creek bed and play areas — chosen for its ability to handle Ocean Shores conditions without heavy watering or upkeep, while staying resilient near a high-traffic play space.
