Poolside Landscape Design — Ocean Shores
A pool surround built for everyday use. Travertine paving, jarrah decking and built-in bench seating turn the pool area into the main outdoor living space, not just a walkway around the water.
The brief called for a poolside space that worked for entertaining, with privacy from the boundary and no bare, unused ground around the pool.
Designing a Poolside Space for Everyday Use
This garden is built around how the pool gets used, not just how it looks. Travertine paving surrounds the pool itself; jarrah decking picks up where the paving ends, giving the space two distinct surfaces without a hard break between them. Built-in bench seating doubles as screening along one edge, so seating and privacy come from the one structure instead of two separate additions.
No unused ground. No single flat surface doing every job. Stone walling and raised feature beds give the garden structure at different heights, so the space doesn't read as one flat pool deck.
A Garden Built Around the Pool
Ocean Shores pool areas often end up as a strip of paving with nowhere to sit and nothing planted around it. This one needed to work for entertaining — seating, privacy at the boundary, and light for use after dark.
Paving & Decking
Travertine paving covers the main pool surrounds, chosen for its cool surface underfoot and its wet-area performance. Jarrah hardwood decking extends the usable area beyond the paving, linking the pool zone to the rest of the garden.
Seating, Screening & Walls
Bench seating is built into the layout with screening worked in behind it, so the seating does double duty as a privacy edge. A bamboo-style screen — a manufactured screen with a bamboo finish, not a planted hedge — closes off the boundary line further along. Stone walling ties the levels together and gives the raised beds something to sit against.
Garden Beds, Planting & Lighting
Raised feature beds lift the planting off the ground plane, keeping garden beds separate from the paved and decked areas. Tropical planting fills the beds, chosen to suit the Northern Rivers climate. Garden lighting is worked through the space for use after dark, along the seating, the beds, and the pool edge.
The Result
A pool area that functions as the main outdoor living space, not a strip of paving around the water. Seating, screening, planting and lighting all work together, so the space holds up for entertaining as well as everyday use.

FAQ
-
Travertine stays cooler underfoot than many paving options, which matters directly around a pool. It's also durable in wet-area use and weathers well outdoors.
-
Yes. Garden lighting is planned as part of the layout, not added afterwards — positioned around seating, garden beds and the pool edge so the space works after dark as well as during the day.
-
It maximises space on smaller Ocean Shores blocks by combining seating and privacy into one structure. No need for separate furniture or fences — the bench provides usable lounging while subtly screening the boundary.
