Formal Garden — Ocean Shores

A formal garden works through structure, not decoration. This one's built around clean lines — split-face block raised walls framing the beds, clipped hedging defining the space, turf carrying the eye through, and a single Japanese maple as the garden's quiet centrepiece.

Nothing competing for attention. Just order, symmetry, and one feature allowed to stand out.

Designing a Formal Garden Around Structure

A formal garden earns its character from restraint — straight lines, clear boundaries, and planting that holds its shape rather than growing wild. The brief here was to bring that structure to an Ocean Shores property using split-face block raised walls, defined hedging, and turf, with a single Japanese maple positioned as the garden's feature.

Everything else in the space plays a supporting role, so that one tree can do the work of drawing the eye.

Design & Construction

Raised garden beds were built from split-face block, giving the space clear geometric edges and a textured, defined line between planting and lawn. The block walls do double duty — structural retaining where needed, and a defining edge for the formal layout.

Hedging & Turf

Hedging was planted in Photinia 'Red Robin', kept clipped and dense to hold a neat, architectural line along the beds — its new-growth red foliage also giving the hedge a seasonal lift against the otherwise restrained palette. Turf fills the open space between beds, giving the layout room to breathe and keeping the overall design uncluttered.

Feature Tree

A Japanese maple sits as the garden's centrepiece — its form and colour standing apart from the clipped hedging and turf around it, exactly because everything else in the space was kept deliberately restrained.

The Result

A formal Ocean Shores garden built on clean structure rather than ornament. Split-face block raised walls, Photinia hedging, and turf form the frame; the Japanese maple is the one thing allowed to stand out.

Built to last. Built to belong.
