Rustic Fire Pit & Outdoor Living — Banora Point

A fire pit changes how a garden gets used. This outdoor living space in Banora Point was built around one — recycled railway sleepers for seating, cobblestone underfoot, and a custom fire pit at the centre of it all. The kind of space you end up at every evening without planning to.

The brief was straightforward: make it feel like it’s always been here. Make it last.

Designing a Small Backyard for Real Outdoor Living

This Banora Point space works because every element serves a clear purpose. We designed the entire area around one question — what does this backyard need after dark? The answer shaped every decision: fire pit at the centre, seating built around it, paving and lighting positioned to perform when the sun goes down.

No wasted space. No competing features. A compact yard with strong intent will always outperform a large one without focus.

A Space Built for Evening Use

This outdoor living space in Banora Point was designed around a single question — what does this space need to work after dark? The answer shaped everything: fire pit first, then seating, paving, and lighting all positioned outward from it.

Banora Point properties often have underused rear sections. This one had the bones — level ground, good privacy, room to work with. What it needed was structure and purpose.

Design & Construction

The fire pit is custom built — solid construction, correct dimensions for heat output and airflow, designed to be used hard for years without deterioration. It's not a kit. It's built in place, which is the difference between something that lasts and something that doesn't.

Railway sleepers were chosen for the seating and border elements. Recycled hardwood, dense and heavy, with the kind of character that only comes from age. They bed into the ground properly and won't move. Cobblestone paving completes the floor — set on a prepared base, tight jointed, with the uneven texture that suits the material palette.

Materials

Recycled railway sleepers are one of the most durable landscaping materials available. Hardwood treated under pressure for decades of rail use — by the time they come into a garden they've already proven themselves. They sit naturally alongside cobblestone and rough stone without needing to be dressed up.

Cobblestone paving handles foot traffic, fire heat, and Northern Rivers weather without complaint. Laid correctly on a compacted base it won't shift, won't puddle, and won't require ongoing maintenance.

The Result

An outdoor living space that gets used. The fire pit draws people in from the moment it's lit — the seating wraps around it at the right distance, the cobblestone grounds the space, and the sleepers give it weight and permanence.

It looks like it's always been there. That's the point.

Built to last. Built to belong.
