Zen Garden Design — Byron Bay

A garden needs one feature strong enough to anchor it. This one's built around a corten steel ornamental ring, resting on solid local stone, framed by timber and cactus.

No lawn. No high-maintenance planting. Just structure, texture, and materials doing the work.

Designing a Garden Around One Bold Feature

Most gardens are built from many elements competing for attention. This one was designed around a single idea — a 2m corten steel ring ornament, mounted on a large local boulder, framed by a red ironbark batten fence.

Everything else in the space was deliberately restrained to let the ring stand on its own. Bluestone crazy paving with wide joints. Xeriscape planting — cacti, snake plants, agave — instead of anything that needed regular water or care. Groundcover between the stepping stones instead of lawn.

One strong feature. Everything else doing less, so that one thing can do more.

Design & Construction

The 2m corten steel ring ornament was fabricated off-site and mounted through a fire bowl planted with succulents and a bonsai-style specimen. It sits directly on a large local boulder — no hidden footings, the stone is the base.

Behind it, a red ironbark batten fence runs the boundary. The spacing allows filtered light and neighbouring greenery to come through while maintaining privacy.

Paving & Planting

Bluestone crazy paving was laid with generous joints, with groundcover planted between the stones to soften the surface without creating maintenance. Around the boulder, cacti and snake plants provide year-round structure with almost zero ongoing care.

A corten steel outdoor shower was plumbed against the boundary wall, tying the material language together across the whole space.

The Result

A low-maintenance Byron Bay garden built around one 2m feature. The corten ring ornament, local boulder, timber fence, and xeriscape planting work as one material palette — nothing competing, nothing needing constant attention.

Built to last. Built to belong.
