Private Courtyard Garden Design — Ocean Shores
A private courtyard has to do a lot with a small footprint — privacy, greenery, and somewhere to actually sit, all in a contained space. This one's built around travertine paving, natural stone walling, and layered textural planting, with a hardwood timber screen bringing warmth into the mix.
No wasted space, nothing overscaled for the site. Just a tight, considered courtyard that earns its privacy through materials rather than height.
Designing a Private Courtyard for a Small Footprint
A courtyard doesn't have room for wasted gestures — every material has to earn its place. The brief here was privacy and usability in a compact Ocean Shores courtyard, built around travertine paving underfoot, natural stone walling for structure and enclosure, and a hardwood timber screen to soften the hard materials, with textural planting worked in around the edges.
Nothing oversized for the space. Every element chosen to make a small courtyard feel considered rather than cramped.
Design & Construction
Travertine paving was laid throughout the courtyard, giving the space a consistent, light-toned surface that opens the area up rather than closing it in. Natural stone walling frames the courtyard's boundaries, providing structure and a natural privacy screen without needing additional fencing.
Timber Screen & Planting
A hardwood timber screen was built into the courtyard to reinforce privacy and add material warmth against the travertine and stone. Textural planting was layered in around the stone walls and paving edges, softening the built surfaces without crowding the usable floor space.
The Result
A private Ocean Shores courtyard that makes the most of a small footprint. Travertine paving, natural stone walling, a hardwood timber screen, and textural planting work together as one enclosed, usable space — private without feeling boxed in.

FAQ
-
Natural stone walling and layered planting provide privacy and structure without the boxed-in feel a solid fence can create, keeping sightlines open while still screening the space from neighbours.
-
Yes — travertine's light tone helps open up a compact space visually, and it holds up well underfoot in a contained courtyard area.
-
Mixing hard materials like stone with a timber screen and textural planting keeps a small courtyard from feeling flat or overly hard-surfaced — each material does different work, so the space doesn't have to rely on any one thing.
