Designing Walls Built for Public Use
A playground wall isn't judged the way a private garden feature is. It gets climbed on, sat on, and used harder than anything in a residential setting — so the brief here wasn't just about how the walls looked, it was about how they'd hold up.
Sandstone was the right material for both jobs at once. As a retaining wall, it holds the slope on the site. As a feature wall, it defines the play area and gives families somewhere solid to sit while kids use the space. One material doing structural and functional work at the same time.

Design & Construction
The retaining sections were built to hold the natural slope of the site at Woodburn Park, using sandstone selected and shaped for the job rather than pre-cast block. The feature walls extend from the retaining work to define the edges of the play area itself, doubling as informal seating for parents watching kids in the space.
Sandstone was chosen over timber sleepers or besser block for durability — no rot, no cracking under load, and no ongoing maintenance in a public setting where upkeep isn't guaranteed to be regular.
The Result
