A courtyard works when the materials do the talking.
Travertine paving and steps, a retaining wall clad in ledger stone, and a hardwood bench with storage built in. Turf and lighting finish the space.
Bangalow — Courtyard
Travertine paving and steps lead through the courtyard, with a retaining wall clad in ledger stone, thin-cut natural stone fitted as a facing over the structural wall. A hardwood timber bench seat with built-in storage sits to one side, with a large turf area and garden lighting completing the space.
Designing a Courtyard
A courtyard has less room to hide behind than a garden, so every surface has to earn its place. The travertine sets the floor and carries the steps. The ledger stone faces the retaining wall. The hardwood bench gives the space somewhere to sit and to put things away. Turf adds the soft surface, and lighting extends the use of the space into the evening.
Travertine Paving and Steps
Travertine is a hard wearing natural stone that stays cooler underfoot than a darker paving in full sun. Here French pattern format is used as it works well in large areas.
Ledger Stone Wall Cladding
The retaining wall is faced in ledger stone, thin-cut natural stone fitted over the structural wall. The wall holds the ground, and the stone gives it the finish. It's real stone, which weathers and settles over time where a manufactured panel wouldn't.
Hardwood Bench With Storage
A courtyard has little room for a separate storage box, so the storage is built into the seat. The hardwood bench gives the space seating and keeps what would otherwise be left out of sight and off the floor.
Turf and Lighting
A large turf area gives the courtyard a soft, open surface against the stone and paving. Lighting carries the space after dark.
The Result
A courtyard where paving, stone and timber each have one job and meet cleanly. Built to be used.
